BioE Research
Research in bioengineering includes activities relevant to upstream and downstream
processing in biotechnology, as well as issues surrounding drug formulation
and delivery, and biomedical materials engineering. Bioprocess engineering research
uses the metabolic capacities of living organisms to produce enzymes and pharmaceuticals,
semiconductor nanomaterials, biofuels, and to breakdown toxic materials, among
other applications. Activities in drug formulation and delivery are focused
on formulation and delivery strategies for extremely high value therapeutic
proteins. Biomaterials research is directed mainly toward surface derivatization
and coating to impart biocompatibility and therapeutic function to implantable
devices. All of these activities are extended in support of CBEE educational
outreach programs as well.
