Fellowship Opportunities for Graduate Students
The DOE Office of Science Graduate Fellowship program supports outstanding students to pursue graduate training in basic research in areas of physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, computational sciences, and environmental sciences relevant to the Office of Science and to encourage the development of the next generation scientific and technical talent in the US. Each fellowship award will be $50,500 per year for three years to provide support for tuition, living expenses, research materials and travel to research conferences. Fellowships awarded in the first year will be funded in part by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Environmental Engineers of the Future Masters Fellowship - Preference is given to qualified students that are currently enrolled in a qualified undergraduate program and planning to attend one of the participating universities to obtain a masters degree in environmental engineering. Upon graduation, the student must work for one of the sponsoring firms/agencies for a 2-year period. Funding of up to $10,000. Applications due December 1, 2009.
The East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes (EAPSI). These programs are designed to provide U.S. graduate students in science and engineering: 1) first-hand research experience in Australia, China, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore or Taiwan; 2) an introduction to the science and science policy infrastructure of the respective location; and 3) orientation to the society, culture and language. The goals of EAPSI are to introduce students to East Asia and Pacific science and engineering in the context of a research setting, and to help students initiate scientific relationships that will better enable future collaboration with foreign counterparts. The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Scholarship Graduate Program provides financial assistance to women admitted to accredited baccalaureate or graduate programs, in preparation for careers in engineering, engineering technology and computer science. SWE Scholarships are only open to women pursuing baccalaureate or graduate degrees in engineering or computer science, as well as engineering and computer science students enrolled in ABET-accredited engineering programs. Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for
Service Program. The purpose is to promote the education, recruitment and
retention of outstanding undergraduate and graduate students in science, mathematics, and engineering studies; the DoD is also interested in supporting the education of future scientists and engineers in a number of interdisciplinary areas. Scholarships and fellowships awarded include salary or stipend, full tuition, required fees, federal employee benefits, and up to $1000 book allowance per year. The SMART Program will allow individuals to acquire an education in exchange for a period of employment with the Department of Defense. The program is intended for citizens of the United States; students must be at least 18 years of age to be eligible for an award. Application cycle is August to December. Grant A. Harris Research Instruments Fellowship - This fellowship provides $5,000 worth of Decagon research instruments to a graduate student studying any aspect of environmental science or geotechnical science. This year the committee will be emphasizing studies that propose innovative soil and plant monitoring. Six awards will be made. Applications are due December 18, 2009.
The Green Technology Entrepreneurship Academy - offers a one-week entrepreneurship academy for science and engineering PhD students, post-doctoral researchers and faculty working on research in green and sustainable technologies who want to take the first steps toward commercializing their research, launching a venture and moving their ideas out of the lab and into the world. The academy is open to applicants from national and international universities. Accepted applicants receive fellowships to cover room, board and tuition Applications available January 1, 2010. National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowships - The fellowship program is sponsored by the Army Research Office, Office of Naval Research, Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the DoD High Performance Computing Modernization Program. This program is intended for U.S. citizens or nationals at or near the beginning of their graduate studies in science or engineering. The fellowships are for three-year tenures and include full tuition and fees, a competitive stipend, and a health insurance allowance. The application cycle is from September to January. Applications due: January 4, 2010.
Sigma Xi is a scientific organization that offers grants-in-aid to fund research by undergraduate and graduate students in science and engineering disciplines.

Jesse M. Bell Memorial Graduate Student Loan Program, which was created by the estate of Jesse Bell for the purpose of providing loans for worthy graduate students of high scholastic standing to enable their pursuit of graduate study in an OUS institution. These non-need-based loans are available on a one-time basis to enrolled graduate students to assist with educational and/or research expenses associated their advanced degrees. Both domestic and international degree-seeking graduate students may be considered. Loans up to $5,000 are anticipated, and will be dependent upon the merits of the case, the loan demand, and the current balance available in the loan fund. The Delson Bridge to the Future Fund, an endowment fund administered by the OSU Graduate School, was created to honor Irma Delson, who dedicated her many years at OSU to serving students from all over the world. It is designed to assist students in the final phase of their graduate education to pay research expenses, publication costs, and other incidentals that stand in the way of completing their studies. NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) provides students with three years of funding, up to $121,500, for research-focused Master’s and PhD degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics fields. Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowships Program for Achieving Excellence in College and University Teaching. Fellowships for individuals planning a career in teaching and research at the college or university level in a research-based field of science, social sciences, or humanities. Stipends and Allowances: predoctoral--$20,000 to the fellow, institutional allowance of $2,000 for three years; dissertation--$21,000 for one year; postdoctoral--$40,000 for one year, $1,500 employing institution allowance, to be matched by employing institution. Application deadline dates are in early November.
Anchor Environmental Scholarship, an environmental science and engineering consulting firm whose expertise and focus is in aquatic-based remediation and waterfront development projects. To promote and help support those who have chosen these fields of study, Anchor has established a scholarship fund to assist graduate students in their pursuit of higher education. Full-time graduate students or persons accepted to an United States graduate school; Undergraduate GPA equivalent of B average or higher; Majoring in: fisheries; environmental sciences; planning/land use; landscape architecture; or coastal, geotechnical or environmental engineering (any of which has an aquatic/waterfront emphasis). OSU Student Sustainability Initiative - is accepting grant applications for student projects. This means that as a student, you can apply for a sustainability related project. There are $12,000 available for next year in grants, and one single project may apply for up to $6,000 dollars. Projects that benefit sustainability, OSU students, and the SSI's mission, "supporting student efforts to create a sustainable community at OSU through opportunity, education, and action" are more likely to be funded. Science Foundation Graduate Teaching Fellows in K-12 Education
(GK-12) - This program supports fellowships and associated training
that enable graduate students in NSF- supported science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines to acquire additional
skills that will broadly prepare them for professional and scientific
careers in the 21st century. Through interactions with teachers in
K-12 schools, graduate students can improve communication and teaching
skills while enriching STEM instruction in K-12 schools. In addition,
the GK-12 program provides institutions of higher education with an
opportunity to make a permanent change in their graduate programs
by including partnerships with K-12 schools in a manner that is of
mutual benefit to their faculties and students.
