CHE/BIOE/ENVE students:
The College
of Engineering
scholarship application is now on-line. To be considered for scholarships in
the School of Chemical, Biological and Environmental
Engineering (CBEE) you must fill out this application:
http://engr.oregonstate.edu/students/apps/index.html
Over 80 undergraduate awards were given in CBEE this past year!
----
A more stringent incomplete grading policy is now in effect this term.
To insure successful course completion, the student and instructor will fill
out a “contract for completion of “I” grade”,
specifying the date when the coursework is to be completed. Instructors
will issue the student’s current grade along with the “I” at the end of the
term. If the coursework is not completed as
stated in the contract, the “I” will be removed and replaced by the end
of term grade.

FE EXAM APPLICATION DUE DATE HAS
BEEN MOVED UP. We hope that many
of you will be taking the April 2008 Fundamentals of Engineering examination.
Applications for this exam are available at http://www.osbeels.org/fset_fefls_edu.htm
and we have received word that they are due December 1, 2007 (not January 15th

Examiners for Engineering and Land Surveying (OSBEELS) has not yet made this
change widely known, and has indicated that they will accept applications
postmarked by January 15, 2008, we nonetheless urge you to get your application in by December 1st
to avoid any possible complications.

Linus and Ava Helen Pauling’s
legacy of peace activism is detailed in a major new Web site released by the
Oregon State University Libraries Special Collections. “Linus
Pauling and the International Peace Movement: A Documentary History,” utilizes more than 500
digitized archival documents and nearly 90 minutes of audio and video footage
to illustrate the story of the Paulings’ peace crusade.

OSU Upcoming Events
___________________________________________________________________
Greetings!
Last year you and many of your colleagues donated suits and interview

hundreds of students to purchase clothing at an incredible price - for instance
$15.00 for a suit already dry cleaned!
The event is happening again this year and we are soliciting your donations
again! We hope you will clean your closet over the holidays and consider
donating your gently used items to support this important event for Oregon
State University Students!
Donations are tax deductible and accepted at these locations:
OSU Bookstore Beaver Fan Shop
121 SW Morrison #120
Portland, Oregon
OSU Career Services
8 Kerr Administration
Corvallis, Oregon
Donated business apparel will be used to help OSU Students in the 3rd Annual
Career Makeover sponsored by MANRRS (Minorities in Agriculture, Natural
Resources and Related Sciences), OSU Career Services, and Campbell's Cleaners.
Questions and employer site pickup arrangements can be directed to Wanda Crannell
at (541) 737-2999 or additional information can be found at

This summer 2008 (June 15 - August 22), UWEB will sponsor a 10-week
research program for undergraduates on the university's Seattle campus. Participants will be involved
in ongoing research projects with investigators, and will have the opportunity
to take part in workshop training sessions in ethics, communication skills, and

I wish to
draw your attention to the postdoctoral
program at NIST that is run by the National Research Council. It is a
prestigious program - many past NRC postdoctoral fellows have gone on to have
extremely productive careers at NIST, academia and industry. The
NRC web site lists the research opportunities that are currently
available. It is not exhaustive and new projects are always
welcome. The deadline for the application is February 1, 2008 and
it requires submission of a research proposal. We can provide guidance in the
development of a new proposal. The start date is sometime between July
2008 and roughly April 2009. (There are two competitions per year).
Research in my group includes nanotubes (separation, surface-nanotube
interactions, processing, rheology, scattering and dispersion), micro and
nano-rheological flows, microfluidics (colloids, micelles, nanotubes and
emulsions) and self-assembly. If you would like to pursue a career
in these areas, and are interactive, creative and motivated, then we may be a
good fit.

Unfortunately, this competition is only open to US
citizens.

Janelia Undergraduate Scholars
- Our program gives undergraduates an opportunity to spend 10 weeks during
the summer working as an intern in the lab of a mentor at Janelia Farm. The
scholars are encouraged to attend weekly seminars and other events at Janelia.
At the end of the session, each scholar will present their work at a symposium.
Janelia Farm, a unique, world-class research facility near Washington, D.C.,
focuses on two challenging areas of research: Identifying the principles
governing how groups of neurons process information and developing new imaging
technologies and computational methods for image analysis. Our highly
collaborative structure is designed to support interdisciplinary work in small
lab groups. The 689-acre campus along the Potomac River is home to a growing
community of 22 research groups that includes neuroscientists, molecular
biologists, engineers, chemists, physicists, geneticists, computational
biologists, and computer scientists. We want to identify some of the very best
future scientists, engineers, and mathematicians interested in our areas of
research at an early career stage. We expect this to enrich the students'
intellectual development and to benefit research at Janelia.
Requirements: Any matriculated undergraduate may apply.
To apply & for more information: Go to
http://www.hhmi.org/janelia/undergrad.html Candidates must supply academic
data, resumes, and name two individuals to supply letters of reference. We also
ask candidates to specify the lab head they want to work with at Janelia and
propose a project. We will use these short research proposals as our main tool
to decide between candidates.
Location: Washington
D.C. area (Accommodations are
provided in their housing village)
Deadline:February 1, 2008, including reference letters.
