Puzzle
For This week!
It was said to start a tale of woe.
Now eyes are sometimes said
to gleam from fallen blocks instead.
Sometimes fatal its cool embrace,
Sometimes deadly its pointed taste.
And finally a charming way to earn your pay.
What am
I?
Find
the answer at the end of the newsletter. J

This is a REMINDER that we will have a
Graduate School Information night with faculty and graduate students providing
information and answering questions for undergraduate students interested in
attending graduate school in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, or
Environmental Engineering. It would be great to have representatives (faculty
and grad students)from each discipline there to answer questions.
Format (pretty open-ended)
1) Overwiew of the Grad School
process (Skip + others) -when to apply, -what to apply for (PhD vs MS) -where

JOBS

I wish to draw your attention to the postdoctoral program
at NIST that is run by the National Research Council. It is a prestigious
program - many past NRC postdoctoral fellows have gone on to have extremely
productive careers at NIST, academia and industry. The NRC web site
lists the research opportunities that are currently available. It is not
exhaustive and new projects are always welcome. The deadline for
the application is February 1, 2008 and it requires submission of a research
proposal. We can provide guidance in the development of a new proposal.
The start date is sometime between July 2008 and roughly April 2009.
(There are two competitions per year).
Research in my group includes nanotubes (separation, surface-nanotube
interactions, processing, rheology, scattering and dispersion), micro and
nano-rheological flows, microfluidics (colloids, micelles, nanotubes and
emulsions) and self-assembly. If you would like to pursue a career
in these areas, and are interactive, creative and motivated, then we may be a
good fit.
General information about the program at NIST including salary and benefits:
http://nrc58.nas.edu/pgasurvey/data/aobooks/rapbooks.asp?mode=frntmtr&progctr=50&seq=20
Unfortunately, this competition is only open to US citizens.
