Revolution in CBEE is a comprehensive programmatic initiative to make bold and deliberate changes to the educational environment and practices in the School of Chemical, Biological, and Environmental Engineering (CBEE) at Oregon State University (OSU). We have two related goals: (1) to create a culture where everyone in the CBEE community feels valued and belongs and (2) to create a learning environment that prompts students and faculty to meaningfully connect curricular and co-curricular activities and experiences to each other and to professional practice. We address a major need of society – to develop engineers from diverse backgrounds ready to face the challenges of the 21st century. This project leverages important recent shifts in ways to think about learning that move away from "decontextualized" content. We aim to have students connect what they learn to the context of their lives, identities, and emerging careers. Through this change, CBEE graduates will be dramatically better prepared to apply their knowledge to whatever new and unpredictable challenges face our society in the years to come.
This work is resourced by a grant from the National Science Foundation’s REvolutionizing engineering and computer science Departments (RED) program, but is really owned by the CBEE community. The work leverages several projects that began prior to this grant, and draws upon a departmental community with a collective commitment to address the difficult and important work of change.
