Synovial fluid cushions and
lubricates the synvoial joints of the human body, such as the knee. The
biopolyelectrolyte known as hyaluronic acid is the component of synovial fluid
primarily responsible for its rheological properties; however, this polymer is
degraded in cases of advanced osteoarthritis, resulting in increased wear and
tear on the knee. A synthetic replacement for hyaluronic acid, possibly composed
of naturally-occurring gums, would be a cost effective way to restore
rheological stability to the joint.
