The problen statement was to
determine the effectiveness of two different emulsifying agents
on the stability of an oil in water emulsion and to determine the
rate of dissolution when the hydrophobic drug sulfasalazine is
placed in an oil in water emulsion and how this is affected by
different emulsifiers.
There was two parts in the experimental method.
The first part was to Homogenize a mixture of phosphate buffer,
corn oil, and a variable emulsifier (tween 80, gelatin, or no
emulsifier) and draw samples from the bottom of the emulsion at
intervals of O, i, 2, 3, 5, and 10 minutes and measure the
absorbance at 500 nm.The second part was to add a mixture of corn
oil, sulfasalazine, and a variable emulsifier (SDS, Tween 80, and
no emulsifier) to phosphate buffer while it is being minimally
agitated, and draw samples from the mixture at defined intervals,
the final sample taken after 45 minutes, and measure the
absorbance at 360 nm.
