The Pete and Rosalie Johnson Undergraduate Scholarship Program

Pete and Rosalie Johnson established the Pete and Rosalie Johnson Undergraduate Scholarship Program to support undergraduates at OSU who are pursuing careers in engineering and science.

The Johnsons believe that work experience is necessary for students to become fully educated, and that it is within the structure of a formalized work experience that students meld technical knowledge with professional behavior resulting in professional efficacy. The typical university curriculum offers excellent technical and academic training, but little professional behavior development that is required to be immediately prepared for practice upon graduation. Universities depend upon internships and summer work experiences, both in institutional research and industrial environments, to supply this training.

Our students in the School of Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering compete nationally for the few summer experiences available. In order to be competitive for summer positions after the sophomore year of schooling, they need to have demonstrated mastery of skills not taught or practiced at other schools.

The Johnson Scholarship Program provides this competitive edge by providing professional classroom and work experience for participants during the freshman and sophomore years; mentoring and employer-supported internship opportunities and experiences are part of the junior and senior year experience. Students experience professional skill training in project planning, budgeting, purchasing, implementation, reporting and oral presentation. They work with seasoned professionals, rather than just their student peers, in professional workplace environments with structured work times, supervision and personal accountability, including formal evaluations and mentoring.
