Molecular characterization of biological processes in engineered treatment systems, risk assessment of emerging contaminants and water and energy sustainability through the anaerobic treatment of wastewater. Current research projects include: characterizing the ecotoxicity of silver nanoparticles to nitrifying bacteria, assessing the ability of bacteria to develop antibiotic resistance after chronic exposure to environmental concentrations of pharmaceuticals, and enhanced methane production from the co-digestion of fats, oils and greases (FOG) in wastewater anaerobic digesters.
