Bridging 'The Science Gap': Jorge Cham, creator of “Piled Higher and Deeper” (PHD Comics), will give a public lecture called “The Science Gap” on Thursday, Feb. 8, from 9 to 10:15 a.m. in the Austin Auditorium of the LaSells Stewart Center. Thought-provoking yet humorous, this talk will examine the need to close the Science Gap, a disconnect in both communication and perception between researchers and the public. Clean Water REU: The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program (SURF), presented by CBEE and CCE, will award 15 to 20 fellowships of $4,500 for undergraduate students to support hands-on research in the areas of community resilience, clean water engineering, and infrastructure renewal. During the eight-week program, June 18 to Aug. 24, students will work with a faculty mentor and graduate student on a specific project and will develop research skills to increase graduate school opportunities. Advances in 3-D printing: Sterling Chaffins, HP senior scientist, will present “HP’s Multijet Fusion 3D printing technology: enabling the next industrial revolution,” hosted by the OSU Biomedical Engineering Society. HP’s technology enables designers to print high-resolution, finished parts at a fraction of traditional manufacturing cost. Refreshments will be served. Free. Virtual career fair: Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) are co-hosting a virtual career fair from 9 a.m. to noon PST on Thursday, Feb. 22. ORNL is the U.S. Department of Energy’s largest science and energy lab, dedicated to accelerating the development and deployment of solutions in clean energy and global security.
